AI search engines are the future of online visibility

The way people search online is changing faster than ever.

Where almost everything used to start in Google, people now increasingly ask their questions to AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and other smart search engines. Instead of comparing dozens of websites themselves, users expect a clear answer or a concrete recommendation right away.

And that is exactly where an enormous shift is happening for businesses.

Because the question is no longer just: “Do you rank high in Google?”

But more and more often: “Does your business get recommended when AI answers a question?”

People search differently than they used to

Traditionally, someone would type into Google:

  • “restaurant Den Bosch”
  • “best real estate agent near Utrecht”
  • “good painter Brabant”

That person would then browse several websites, reviews and businesses to eventually make a choice themselves.

With AI, that process changes completely. People now ask questions like:

  • “What is a reliable marketing agency nearby?”
  • “Which businesses have the best experiences?”
  • “What is a good hotel for a weekend away?”
  • “Which plumber is well reviewed?”

AI systems then give direct recommendations, summaries and suggestions without users having to open dozens of websites.

That means online visibility is no longer just about being found, but increasingly about being recommended.

Online trust and interaction become even more important

AI systems look at signals of trustworthiness to determine which businesses are relevant and credible. Think of:

  • positive reviews
  • recent ratings
  • online reputation
  • consistent business information
  • strong visibility
  • relevant content
  • authority within an industry

Businesses with few reviews (interaction), outdated information or a weak online presence therefore run a greater risk of becoming less visible in AI search queries.

And that has direct consequences. Because when AI systems recommend certain businesses more often, those businesses automatically get:

  • more visibility
  • more trust
  • more clicks
  • and ultimately more customers

Good businesses risk becoming invisible

Many entrepreneurs deliver great quality but pay little attention to their online visibility. For years that could sometimes be compensated by word of mouth or existing customers.

But online behaviour is changing.

As people rely more and more on AI recommendations, the risk grows that good businesses simply aren't visible at the moment potential customers are searching.

Not because they're worse. But because their online signals are weaker than those of competitors.

That is exactly why online reputation means so much more today than just “nice reviews”. It increasingly determines whether your business is included in online recommendations at all.

Reviews play a bigger role than ever

Reviews are one of the most powerful trust signals that exist online. They not only show potential customers that your business is reliable, but also give search engines and AI systems valuable information about:

  • quality
  • online customer satisfaction
  • relevance
  • activity
  • trustworthiness

Businesses with many recent, positive reviews therefore build a much stronger online position than businesses that neglect their online reputation.

And it is precisely those strong signals that are crucial for AI search engines. Businesses that act on this today are building an enormous head start.
